Meet our Principal

Leigh Daniels

I have been at Brookfield Village Elementary since 2021 and am excited to lead our amazing community as your principal.  I have been in the field of education for over two decades as a teacher, vice principal, and interim principal, working with students ranging from prekindergarten to adults. Prior to working as a teacher, I worked for the Legislative Counsel Bureau as a Senior Legal, focusing on the Education Code, Family Code, and Penal Code. This experience, and having others in my family who are in the field of education, inspired me to want to become an advocate for all children and their families.

“It Takes A Village To Raise A Child” is an old African proverb that means it takes a community of different people interacting with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe environment. This truly represents Brookfield Village Elementary School and comes to life as the majority of the students at Brookfield need various levels of support to enhance their academic and social emotional learning, utilizing parents, grandparents, guardians, neighbors, and other community partners in Oakland.  Currently, Brookfield Elementary has some notable successes as we continue refining our focus on positive student outcomes of academic achievement, by having integrity to the district adopted curriculum, maintaining high expectations for ourselves and our students, keeping open communication with all of our families, using data to drive our decisions, and providing evidence to support our outcomes.  This is a cycle with various challenges, but I am a firm believer that with the proper “life jacket” we can ride any wave!  In addition, extracurricular programming is back in full force with exciting options for students including coding, robotics, a soccer team, and gardening.  We have all demonstrated this tenacity as we continue recovering from the pandemic, and watching the students at the Village thrive!
