Montessori Education
Since January 2025, a design team at Brookfield has been working together to improve our school. This group includes parents, teachers, and people from the district. They have looked at how students are doing in school, how many students are enrolled, and what families and staff think about Brookfield.
The team has updated the school’s mission, values, and goals by listening to what students, families, and staff had to say. They want Brookfield to feel like a true “Village” school—a place where everyone belongs and feels supported. The team is also thinking about ways to improve the school building and our website so that more families want to come here. One big idea they are exploring is to work with a nearby Oakland public charter school called Urban Montessori that is closing. They teach in a way that many Brookfield families are interested in. The two schools may work together to bring Montessori learning to Brookfield and explore how to create a Montessori program at our school.
Montessori education matches the way children naturally learn. It supports students to make choices and learn through hands-on activities at their own pace. In a Montessori classroom, students of different ages learn together and help each other. A lead teacher and an assistant teacher guide students to direct their own learning by exploring classroom materials and their larger communities. This allows students to become more independent, curious, and confident. Montessori schools focus on the whole child, helping students grow in reading, math, history, science, art, and music, while supporting them to be kind, respectful, and responsible.
